3D printers set to produce drugs

18 April 2012 Last updated at 17:32 Scientists are pioneering the use of 3D printers to create drugs and other chemicals at the University of Glasgow. Researchers have used a £1,250 system to create a range of organic compounds and inorganic clusters – some of which are used to create cancer treatments. Longer term, the scientists say the process could be used to make customised medicines

Yahoo axes products in shake-up

18 April 2012 Last updated at 13:00 Yahoo’s chief executive has confirmed plans to shut down dozens of products that are not seen as core to the firm. Scott Thompson announced the move to analysts following the firm’s latest financial report. He said he had asked: “How would we build Yahoo from the ground up if we were building it from scratch today?” As a result he said it would be “shutting down or transitioning roughly 50 properties that don’t contribute meaningfully to engagement of revenue”

MPs call for better porn blocks

18 April 2012 Last updated at 11:19 A cross-party parliamentary inquiry into how safe children are online has concluded the government and internet service providers need to do more. It found that children were easily accessing pornography and websites showing extreme violence. The inquiry called on the government to back moves for stronger filters of adult content.

Twitter proposes patent agreement

18 April 2012 Last updated at 11:09 Twitter has announced plans to put its patents in the control of the engineers and designers behind the innovations. It said the move would mean it could only launch offensive intellectual property lawsuits with their permission. It added that the action would still apply to staff who left the company.
